Pursuing the Heart Does Not Lead to Understanding

Today’s topic was inspired by Proverbs 18:2 (KJV) which says:

A fool hath no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself.

What does the text reveal?

A fool is not interested in understanding (despite protests to the contrary) – their interest lies in discovering the heart. Fools are occupied with “heart work.”

Scripture also describes a fool in Psalm 14:1 (KJV) this way:

The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt…

Let’s review.

A fool says in his heart, there is no God. This disbelief corrupts. A fool then spends time trying to discover what’s going on in their heart – which puts them at odds with understanding.

If the way to understanding is not through the heart, how do we obtain it?

Let’s go to Job 32:8 (KJV):

But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.

Understanding comes to you through the inspiration of the Almighty God. It is a gift from God. If you do not believe that God exists, you will never have understanding.

Operating outside of this mechanism is to engage in foolishness. You cannot divorce God from understanding.

Idle talk (therapy), idle thoughts (worrying, fretting), and idle activities (retreats to find yourself) will never bring you to a place of true understanding.

God has already told us what is in the heart – deceit and wickedness.

Scripture says in Jeremiah 17:9 (KJV) that the heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

True understanding will not come from searching the heart. Understanding will come from God.

Pursue God.

Pursue righteousness.

Pursue holiness.

Spend time in His word.

Leave foolishness behind.
